Map Kibera Project - Mission

There is a lack of reliable data about informal settlements due to the fact that their existence is often, for political and economical reasons, only unofficially recognized by local authorities and the national Governments. Therefore, independent research projects appear to be of paramount necessity to achieve a deeper understanding of such realities, of their quantitative dimension and qualitative features, setting the basis for an effective further implementation of development projects.

The MKP wants to produce reliable data and maps showing the actual physical and socio-demographic features of the Kibera slum, making them available through a digital geo-referenced data base to anyone who's interested about this issue.

WHAT WE WANT TO MAP

Physical and structural features:

  • topography of the terrain
  • structures
  • households
  • business
  • services
  • sewage system (improved and not-improved)
  • water points
  • electricity supply
  • building materials
  • schools
  • health services (clinics, chemistries, dispensaries)

Socio-demographic features:

  • population distribution and density
  • female population
  • minors (under 18 years of age)
  • family status
  • tribes and ethnic origins
  • rents

THE MKP IS BASED ON FIVE MAIN PILLARS

  • in-depth field survey carried out door-by-door
  • open data-base and outcomes
  • transmition of know-how to local communities and involvement of Kenyan researchers
  • finalcial independence from actors who might have interests in contrast with the MKP's values and mission
  • use of freeware GIS software (e.g. QGis)
